Bird Surprises

We were driving up to northwestern Michigan from our homes in Ohio (me) and West ByGod Virginia (Geoff) in search of a bird species that would be a lifer for both of us: the Bohemian Waxwing. A wide-open field in a wind-protected spot, recently visited by both mechanical and living manure-spreaders. Flash forward ten hours.

Best Bird of the Weekend (First of March 2011)

I had a beautifull view on 5 horned grebe here (one in breeding plumage), in Ann Arbor Michigan, for the 3 seconds it lasted, until I heard a huge “CRRACK&# , and I fell through the ice. Male Ruddy Ducks Oxyura jamaicensis in Basic Plumage

I will never forget seeing a flock of around 1,000 birds in Michigan, especially as it took me two decades to come up with a total of two observations (at a single bird each, both females) of its European/central Asian counterpart. They’re lovely birds, and they didn’t ask to come here, after all. Thanks for visiting!
