In the grand scheme of things, this is just a small town and only one person was killed due to injuries suffered. There were 23 cows killed; some had to be shot up in trees where they were stuck. The second responded as I would- with immediate concern and compassion. But this also struck me in other ways.

There's no "compassion" in the process. It's impersonal and hideously ugly and the animals suffer greatly. And regardless of how you treat someone when they're live and regardless of how you kill them, if you don't need to kill them and you're doing so merely to please your palate, how do you justify what you're doing?

When it comes to believers, I agree with Phelps that all religious traditions have some kind of basis for mercy or compassion or relieving suffering that we can use in our advocacy. They might not have a rights position, but we use what we have. Ask them what they had for breakfast. And that is something I just don't understand.
