Finally in 1799, the first visitors on this volcanic land were a group of French seal hunters who were after the fur seals that can be found hauled out on the beaches for fur and oil, which almost wiped out the local population of the species. None of the three voyagers made landfall due to poor weather and dangerous conditions.

It’s not fecal material, but parts that are not digestible like fur, bones and the exoskeletons of insects. For example, since eagles and hawks tend to rip their prey apart and have stronger digestive acids, their pellets look like wads of fur. He asked to take the pellet downstairs to do some comparisons to the collections.

Heading back to Simon’s Town, usually with a following sea making for a comfortable return run to Cape Point, is not without interest as the boat draws in close to Partridge Point for sightings of the endemic Bank Cormorant with adjacent Cape Cormorants for comparison purposes.

Over 3 million pairs of Antarctic Fur Seals breed on South Georgia, saved from near extinction by fur hunters. Others, my favorites, show the species within the habitat: breaching Humpback Whales, a Reindeer confronting a King Penguin (below), an elevated view of a beach full of breeding Fur Seals.
