One reason that I can think of for subjecting myself to such a torturous experience is if I am going birdwatching. I had just ended my ten-day birding adventure in Ecuador (which is a story for another time) when I decided, since I had an amazing time, to prolong my trip a bit longer before heading back to Europe. Ah, what the heck!

The government of Colombia was involved in a long-simmering and occasionally boiling war with guerilla groups in the rural parts of the country. Proud of their nation of music and color and art.

Looking at a photo of a dozen birders on a Colombia tour, it stroke me that they were either using binoculars or cameras. Yet, going through the pages of a book is an irreplaceable experience. Not a single one was using a scope. How about a notebook vs. eBird, Merlin or iNaturalist?
