When I got word of the state first Couch’s Kingbird being seen in the West Village, easily accessible by train, I was up at the Olde Homestead. My official list will include only birds I see on foot and/or using New York City public transportation: mainly buses and trains under the auspices of the MTA, but also the Staten Island Ferry.

Its goal was to limit the greedy collecting of birds killed for the plume trade, the bird meat trade (as in the wholesale slaughter of the Passenger Pigeon), and for sport (again, the Passenger Pigeon and declining numbers of waterfowl). Congress and Senate who recognized the need to protect the birds.

On the first trip in 2012 we used public transport to get there and the train conveniently gets you to Macarthur Square shopping centre and you can then get a bus that drops you right at the entrance to the park. It was interesting to see how few blue items it had been able to collect in that environment. Satin Bowerbird bower.

Finding an Asian Openbill in Singapore-second ever record!

Arriving in Singapore we soon collected our bags and got ourselves a NETS card for travel on public transport and to also use in supermarkets. The train system is fast and efficient and was our primary mode of transport. If the train did not go all of the way then we took a connecting bus or walked.

One Tree Hill-Dandenong Ranges National Park

Having established that there are regular trains from the city of Melbourne to the Dandenong Ranges National Park with a weekend all day train ticket capped at $6 per person it made sense to head that way once again. Once again this was a good birding trip on public transport to see some bush and the birds on offer around Melbourne.

We searched for walks that started and ended near public transport, as we were going to get a ticket- MyMulti 3 -that would let us travel wide and far unrestricted each week. I would recommend this if you are going to be out and about and most stations have regular trains all day including Sundays.

Layover in Singapore

Have a small amount of Singaporean dollars to pay for taxis, trains and drinks. Taxi v SMRT – The SMRT is the excellent, clean, safe, reliable, cheap transport system of Singapore. You will either have to leave it at the airport and collect it later (using up precious time), or carry it with you in hot, humid conditions.
