Collecting birds was clearly a dangerous pastime. Johann Georg Wagner has seven birds named after him, from a chachalaca to a woodpecker, but would he have found more if hadn’t accidentally shot himself while out collecting? Wagner wasn’t the only one to have died from gunshot wounds.

He fell in with a birdy crowd, including the naturalist William Bartram, who encouraged his lofty goal of illustrating all of North America’s birds, and George Ord, who accompanied him on collecting expeditions and supported and championed his work.

Sea Snakes of Northern Australia

The most common species we see are the Stoke’s Sea Snake Astrotia stokesii , Dubois’ Sea Snake Aipysurus duboisii and the Olive Sea Snake Aipysurus laevis. We had collected it to remove from the beach, but it was very useful for sea snakes. The Olive Sea Snake is the one that varies the most in it’s colouration.
