Goat Island, off New Zealand’s Northland, was an amazing diving location without any birds. It was one that myself and a collection of friends, all of whom where marine biologists, rocked up to one New Year’s Eve in order to dive the following day. But that is actually by the by, because diving is its own reward.

Heading south on a good surfaced road, we made slow progress through the herds of cattle, donkeys and goats that thronged the highway, until we finally reached the land of the Konso.

The stunning head plumes of the Gray Crowned-Crane make it attractive to bird collectors and zoos; illegal collecting of wild birds is one of the reasons why this species is now considered Endangered. This plain used to be little affected by humans, being grazed by just a few cattle, goats and camels.

Random thought: What if I had died a month ago and never heard anything from The Burning Hell, nor the new Mountain Goats song “Training Montage” … Such sad and depressing thinking. Nest building: a good activity for a rainy day. You should try it too.
