I was going to change Animal Person to Vegan Atheist 40+ Parenting and come back to blogging. And of course, many self-identified vegetarians eat fishes and/or chickens. During the show they give out Good Egg Awards to kids who've performed "acts of kindness." A good egg is one that is edible. But it's called "chicken."

Hal Herzog’s “ Some We Love, Some We Hate, Some We Eat ” (Harper 2011), though fascinating, is ultimately depressing for vegans and animal rights activists. Well, as it turns out neither a trip to a slaughterhouse nor killing an animal yourself is powerful enough to make people go vegan. You’re right, it is horrible!

There will be no pies or cakes that were made with milk that was meant for calves, or eggs that represent dead male chicks , forced molting, debeaking and other mutilations and cruelties. The two objections to a vegan Thanksgiving that I hear most often are: It's our tradition and Because it tastes good. It's our tradition.

I've been out of every loop I used to be in because my work outside of veganism and animal rights came a-calling in a most critical way. There are new Francione-style abolitionists and new people to veganism who debate about the ethics of consuming eggs from their neighbor's chickens. Yes, we have a long, long way to go.
