When you think of invasives, you think of the birds that have been helped by human beings to get where they are, such as House Sparrow or European Starling. I’d like to introduce you to a diminutive heron, the Cattle Egret Bubuclus ibis. Cattle Egret has been introduced by humans to Hawaii and the Seychelles.

I love sparrows, so seeing a feather-worn Vesper Sparrow this past July filled my heart with joy. I wanted to see prairie birds and I wanted to experience a new state. We saw sparrows–a total of 14 species–and we saw many other great prairie birds, and we often saw them perched on posts.

The final species tally for the four day blitz was 186 ABA-countable species, an impressive total in winter for any location in the United States. Song Sparrow is a genuine rarity in Miami-Dade. This Lincoln’s Sparrow is far more common. Cattle Egret: 133. Clay-colored Sparrow: 1. Savannah Sparrow: 56.

Barn Swallows lined up on the wires outside his cattle barn and Grasshopper Sparrows sang unseen from uncut hayfields. I don’t expect that the rural Piedmont of North Carolina is much different from similar areas across the United States and even the world. He gave me the layout and sent me on my way.

Whether I am speaking about Henslow’s Sparrows and Upland Sandpipers of the east and Midwest that occupy tall-grass prairies or birds like Ferruginous Hawks and Mountain Plovers of the western short-grass prairies; all deserve our attention. You may say this is cynical, but I consider it logical.
