I can certainly speak about the Midwest where states like Wisconsin, Iowa, Minnesota, etc. So barren in fact it is not uncommon to find this grassland species occupying the same habitat as cattle or areas with high degree of human disturbance. have over-developed these areas for agricultural uses.

As impressive as these birds are, many species, particularly in southern Asia , have seen precipitous population declines having to do somewhat with the old habitat issues that plague animals around the world , but more to do with the widespread use of anti-inflammatory drugs on cattle, who then die and are eaten by vultures who are poisoned.

Lacey of Iowa introduced the nation’s first wildlife-protection law, which banned the interstate shipping of unlawfully killed game. The persecution of these apex predators, especially wolves , is rampant among some hunters and cattle ranchers. But I digress. It is obvious that hunting is NOT conservation.
