Birding Inirida, Colombia, or river dolphins and hoatzins, part 2

Am I over-confident in my thinking that we were so interesting that they were investigating us for a good half an hour, until we moved further upriver? We sailed right into a group of more than a dozen Hoatzins (cover photo, by Tyler Ficker) with their orange mohawks and blue facial skin. Later, we would be seeing dolphins every day.

Bass Point Reserve-New South Wales

It was very damp along the edges of the road and there were two male Superb Lyrebirds busy kicking through the leaves right on the edge of the road. As we came through the open fields towards the coast there were numerous Cattle Egrets among the cattle and Straw-necked Ibis. Little Black Cormorants and Little Pied Cormorant.

You do need to be careful of cattle wandering across the highway, as the grass always looks greener on the other side! The puddles right against the highway had Glossy Ibis on them and they were unconcerned about the traffic-though there really isn’t much in the outback!

There is a lot of bird movement around Australia at the moment due to the weather, so time to go and investigate! It actually looked like the station owner was breeding birds rather than cattle! Juvenile Black-winged Stilt The water is still right to the edge of the road and it may well stay like that for quite some time.

Heading south on a good surfaced road, we made slow progress through the herds of cattle, donkeys and goats that thronged the highway, until we finally reached the land of the Konso. Quality time was spent with a friendly Hamar family at their homestead of grass huts surrounding their cattle corral.
