Nowhere in India have I seen broiler horror-chicken like those sold in supermarkets back home. They belong to a long-maned subspecies Sus scrofa cristatus (like four-legged Greco/Roman crested helmets) and are my second race of boar seen in India, while I still remain the only Serbian birder who has never seen one closer to home!

Finally, when our SUV broke down in Gujarat, India, some three years ago, my first two Egyptians were flying above the road! That was not all, a few days later, by one village rubbish dump, not far from Ahmedabad, we had more than 100 Egyptian Vultures (above); plus 20 more at the dead cattle dumping site at the outskirts of the city.

We got particularly great looks at Guira Cuckoo at Pousada Piuval, a resort that is also a cattle ranch; they were active all day, even after many of the birds that gathered in the early morning dispersed, often whistling loudly from the fence posts. Originally from India and the vicinity, it is believed that they had already undergone two major expansions – through Asia Minor in the 1600s, and then across Europe in the 1900s – when they first appeared in North America. It’s just that the exceptions are so much more attention-grabbing. Nicole: Glad you liked it!

And embattled minority should be protected. People that are interested in conservation are all about the should – conservation’s raison d’être is the people perceiving that we should protect species and ecosystems, we should not allow them to be lost to extinction. A hungry child should be fed.
