As a longtime vegan with three vegan-from-birth children, I would like to suggest that since vegetarians are generally healthier than meat eaters, there is no excuse for compassionate people to eat animals. There is no moral difference between eating a dog or a pig, a cat or a chicken.

I went back to New York to the areas where I grew up and went to college and graduate school for a five-day weekend. When referring to cats, dogs and horses of unknown sex, the children would randomly assign sex, with the conventionally "prettier" animals being called "she." We do that with cats and dogs already, right?
