The Domestic Turkey and the First Thanksgiving

They became known as “Turkie Fowl” (spelling varies) because they were coming from the general direction of Turkey. The “Fowl” was dropped and the term “Turkey” was applied to other large Galliformes that were encountered in the New World. They may have also had hunting dogs with them as well.

Eventually one evening driving home I was shocked to get good views of a clapper wandering about my car park (I’m fairly sure it was sneaking my neighbours’ cats food too). Also frequent escapees (or very free ranging domestics) are guinea fowl and to a lesser extent a number of other gamebirds up to and including peacocks.

Best Bird of the Weekend (Second of March 2011)

Highlight was probably a White Throated Rock Thrush, but I’m regretting that I didnt try harder to see a Red Jungle Fowl that I heard. Cats Are Still Public Enemy Number One, For Birds The New York Times and Tweety have it absolutely correct. Wicked, right? Hat-tip to Stella.
