The species I refer to is, of course, the House Sparrow Passer domesticus. But the lowly House Sparrow does not need to stay in the realm of the hated, the persecuted, the vilified. If Philip Morris can become Altria and if Blackwater can become Xe, then why can’t the House Sparrow be rebranded as well?

Prior to serving in the Confederacy, Driver notes, McCown played leading roles in genocidal campaigns against indigenous peoples on the US-Canada border and against the Seminoles in Florida. Let’s not, as has also been proposed, then, rename Saltmarsh Sparrow to honor Roger Tory Peterson, great though his impact on birding may have been.

Twitching

My second twitch, during the winter of 2011, was also in the area of McArthur where an American Tree Sparrow ( Spizella arborea ) was spotted during a Christmas Bird Count. A very rare find in Northern California. For the past several years I have been taking advantage of our many National Wildlife Refuges (NWR) here in Northern California.
