The first time I spotted some movement on the water, focused my binos to see a Common Moorhen , but, hey, there’s something deep behind it, focusing further and seeing two otters diving and surfacing, swirling and playing. And how about Black Storks, otters and eagles?

This was the same for many other of the animals there: potbelly pigs, a sad otter, rabbits, chickens and Bengal cats. I started the campaign for the protection of Beljarica, raising public awareness and collecting more than 10,000 petition signatures, not only because of its Eurasian Otters , White-tailed Eagles , Black Storks , Icterine and Eastern Olivaceous Warblers , etc., but because this large spillway protects the city from flooding.

Even though a 2013 petition by the Royal Society of Protection of Birds failed to convince the Scottish parliament to make it official, the campaign to make the Golden Eagle Scotland’s national bird continues. Swans swim on a small pond on the distillery grounds and deer and otters can be found by a trail that runs beside the burn.
