There is a general consensus that vegetarianism and veganism are different philosophically. And that means for the animal rights movement: Social entities like compassion, empathy and suffering are very important factors to motivate humans to change their behaviour. The campaign should not demand huge changes in society.

Bea directed me to the Animal Welfare Special Report at TheHill.com , in which Rep. A prime example of this is our concern for the welfare of animals in agriculture.". I don't think anyone is campaigning for "farm" animals to become pets, as many of us don't even think the family cat should be the family cat. Translation?
