If I were to describe my long time wildlife nemesis, my ultimate dip of dips, I would reach for a nemesis cat, not a nemesis bird. I had, after all, been to 13 countries that were home to leopards, over the course of 14 years, of which in all but one I had been in habitat suitable for this most adaptable of big cats. One pair of Pied Oystercatchers nest just north of the rocks on Cable Beach and have to deal with the four-wheel drive vehicles and camels on the beach, but as soon as the eggs have hatched out they move the family approximately two kilometres further north through the dune system.

Pied Oystercatcher breeding has started!

With the data we have collected over the years we are hoping to address the predation of eggs by feral cats in the Broome area. The Western Australian government hopes to have new policies in place this year to ensure that all cats are micro-chipped and de-sexed. We had a new pair arrive in a territory about 7kms north four years ago.
