For now, I present a story of an excellent day''s birding on a visit to Los Angeles last week.]. Common birds to the southern California birder, wonderful sights to me. This was the best possible place for the quail, and also the spot for what may be one of my favorite birds in the world, White-headed Woodpecker.

Southern California is loaded with parrots. Quite a few species are well-established and breeding from San Diego to Los Angeles and beyond. Red-crowned Parrot in Irvine Regional Park Despite the number of species involved only one, the Red-crowned Parrot , is considered countable by the California Bird Records Committee.

I have friends who talk nostalgically of birding trips with the Lane’s Guides to Southeast Arizona, or Southern California (there were eight guides in all, some co-written or updated by other birders, notably Henry Holt). I’ve missed this information, especially when I travel to Los Angeles to visit my daughter and her family.

Because I have birded southern California in winter several times there weren’t any of the normally occurring birds that I could get within easy reach of my in-laws house in Orange County. I could go for the American Dipper that was reported in the foothills northeast of Los Angeles.
