On the same day that I journeyed out to eastern Long Island to enjoy birding Shinnecock Inlet in the fog I also explored the fields of Riverhead, where large flocks of geese congregate and where a Yellow-headed Blackbird had been reported recently amid a large flock of icterids at a Buffalo farm. Is it just me? ” What a bird!

He subsequently leaves for Peru and gets kidnapped and killed by Sendero Luminoso – the local brand of Maoists. Looking left I saw a big, male buffalo behind the bush. Having learned from my Namibian experience I walked away briskly. Phoebe Snetsinger was an American birder who first passed the 8,000 species mark.

They are not necessarily the biggest African animals, but represented those that were considered a real hunter’s worthy prey or “game” – the African Elephant, Cape Buffalo, Black Rhinoceros, Leopard and king of the jungle, the Lion (which of course doesn’t inhabit jungle but savanna!).

He interpreted the bones, also at Klasies but other sites in South Africa as well, to indicate that human ancestors hunted only Eland until they became fully modern very recently, then they started hunting the much more dangerous and harder to hunt Buffalo. Any buffalo bones from prior to that transition were obviously scavenged.

The leopards place their kill in a tree, protecting it from poaching by other predators. So, the best way to find a leopard is to find the kill. It was a fresh kill, and though it might take hours, the observers knew that eventually the leopard was going to come back for his breakfast.
