An African Penguin peers protectively around its fluffy chick. Today, there are more than 3,000 birds at this accessible colony and they are protected by fences and stiff fines for human disturbance. Sharks, Cape Fur Seals and even Killer Whales will prey on them in the ocean.

I was on a workshop field trip, learning about marine protected areas as my group snorkeled on one of the area’s famous coral reefs. In addition to sharks, barracuda, rays, and fishes, we had also spotted Double-crested Cormorants , Brown Pelicans , and Magnificent Frigatebirds. Still, they are sensitive to human disturbance.

The bird “spent five months on Mindoro Island in the Philippines during the non-breeding season and migrated through Taiwan, the Chinese east coast, and the Korean peninsula” and on to the Russian Far East (indicating a certain lack of solidarity with Ukraine).
