Our base camp in Olbia was a bit far north for the Greater Flamingo (though like many wading birds, they are prone to wander when the breeding season is done.) One wonders what non-birders think when they get sent through a small town, then down a dirt road past a series of goat pastures and a water-treatment plant.

Invasive species in Australia

European Red Foxes were brought into Australia in the 1850′s for recreational hunting and soon spread rapidly. We have seen them on remote beaches hunting shorebirds and taking their eggs and they have been responsible for much of the egg loss in breeding Pied Oystercatchers along the Broome coast.

There has been growth in the breeding population at the colonies in Morocco (now estimated at 106 breeding pairs and approximately 500 birds in total).
