Individually, many NWRs protect crucial bird habitat. For example, essentially the entire population of the endangered Whooping Crane winters at Aransas NWR in Texas. Farallon NWR , a group of islands near San Francisco, hosts the largest colonies of breeding seabirds south of Alaska. It’s not just for the birds.

A week ago today, the federal government proposed a “threatened” listing for the Greater Sage Grouse in Nevada and California , as part of a larger study considering whether the species as a whole should be listed. As such, I am delighted to see them receive protection. Naturally, not everyone is equally delighted.

Although this park was logged in the past, as a national park it is one of the few forests in Ghana that is really protected. . Here local hunters had known about the colony and for generations had been harvesting the birds by simply picking the adults off their nests during the breeding season. What makes Ghana so special?

The Sacramento River NWR was established 1989 by the authority provided under the Endangered Species Act, Emergency Wetlands Resources Act, and the Fish and Wildlife Act. Units are located along both sides of the river and serve to protect and provide a wide variety of riparian habitats for birds, fish, and other wildlife.”

What could motivate gunmen (I cannot call them hunters) in two states to deliberately kill North America’s tallest and most critically endangered bird? It may be as sick as deliberately targeting an endangered species for death.
