Then, in one of my freshmen science classes, there was a discussion about extinct species, which then lead to the topic of threatened, or endangered species, and what we could do to help out. Now that I am here in Mexico, I finally found them! Much like every beautiful sandy beach, the human encroachment is substantial.

Two are pelagic species, two are resident, and the other one is a mystery. In Costa Rica, the sole tropical breeding albatross is a rare visitor to pelagic waters of the Pacific. A more surefire way to witness this long-winged bird is by visiting breeding grounds on the Galapago Islands. Waved Albatross (Phoebastria irrorata).

I say almost because that particular distinction actually falls to another New Zealand bird, the Black Robin, of which there were once just four (including just one breeding female). And he sometimes travels around New Zealand giving people the chance to encounter one of their most endangered species in a semi-natural habitat.
