Although Henslow’s had been reliably found in nearby Sharon Springs for many years, the last documented sighting was in 2008, and the sighting startled longtime birders, waking them up to the fact that breeding sites in the state were rapidly being lost. Apparently, when breeding, the two parents divide incubation duties, with one bird taking over the daytime duties and another one the nighttime. A kingfisher with a somewhat deficient work ethic, I guess. At between 4 pm and 6 pm, to be exact. Of course, many people still know exactly what they did when this happened. Back to birds.

Second, reading about birds courting and parenting brings out the tendency to identify, which leads directly to anthropomorphism, the tendency to assign birds human emotions and thoughts. Some people love books like that. Think of birds too much as humans and you lose the specialness that makes them birds.

Beloved family pet Dalmatian, Pepper, is stolen, and after several weeks of searching is discovered to have been experimented on at a hospital and died on the table when researchers tried to implant her with an experimental cardiac pacemaker. By the end of my time as researcher, I was performing behavioral experiments on humans.
