They look crap but presumably offer some protection for the chicks, though not from each other (see the murderous activities within the nests in my previous post ). Apparently, when breeding, the two parents divide incubation duties, with one bird taking over the daytime duties and another one the nighttime.

The best season for the north-west circuit is February to May, during the rains when most birds breed. The greatest wildlife spectacles in the world!
