Curious and inventive, he figured out he didn’t need their assistance, just their instructions to help him capture and train a young Cooper’s Hawk. Inexperienced, perhaps overly confident, he didn’t know she was one of the wildest of hawks to train. The concern possessed him. I knew no falconers.

A lovely looking and distinctive sounding bird (so they say, I sadly have not seen one…yet), the Kirtland’s Warbler can only be found during its breeding season in Jack Pine forests 5 to 20 years old in the northern Lower Peninsula of Michigan. Fish and Wildlife Service endangered species list.

One of Don’s first jobs after completing his training was translocating North Island Saddlebacks , which were at that time confined to a single island off Northland. It worked, and the translocated birds were soon breeding. Today the species is secure on a large number of islands and reserves.
