The whistling duck call carries with it the crimes of big business, the failures of governments and the ignorance of irresponsible hunters. A reduction in illegal hunting on Little Cayman has also allowed the ducks to recover there, and in 1995, they bred on Cayman Brac for the first time in many years.&# They are also the rarest.

We actually spent considerable time searching unsuccessfully for this highly sought-after bird; however I did suspect they were not gone, as several hunters I interviewed knew the bird and claimed it still existed. According to the World Bank, up to 80 percent of Ghana’s forests had been destroyed by illegal logging by 2008.
