The islands were purchased by the United States from Denmark in 1916. There are arguments for adding all territories, but experience demonstrates that the ABA moves glacially when it comes to the ABA Area. Although most conservation research focuses on northern breeding grounds, many ABA Area birds spend most of the year elsewhere.
