Shorebird Nesting Season

The magnificent, adorable, and dangerous breeding season for both shorebirds and seabirds along the Florida Panhandle. It’s during these months when I cringe anytime there’s a dog on the beach (though usually dogs aren’t allowed at all), for fear it might go after a fuzzy chick or adult sitting on eggs.

The Association for the Protection of the Great Bustard from Serbia had just about enough counters to cover the Pastures of Great Bustard Special Nature Reserve and the neighbouring areas (birds often spend the winter in arable fields outside the reserve). It therefore qualifies as Vulnerable.

As I watched, it slowly moved into a patch of dried vegetation and I noticed that it was settling over a single egg. Two or three eggs may be laid and either bird may incubate. Getting out of line

Breeding behaviour and plumage was very apparent, but John Wise , an ex-pat Brit now resident in Orlando, told me that the birds’ activities had been held up for a couple of weeks during a cold snap that saw frosts in Florida. Boat-tailed Grackles count eggs and chicks as part of their diet and they were well represented here today.
