In the mean time, a family group of Black-throated Magpie-Jays were frolicking in the breeze high over the dry valley, showing off their exorbitantly long tail streamers. This poorly documented swallow is a breeding endemic to these high mountains.

The wonderful Phainopepla

A member of the small Ptiliogonatidae family of silky-flycatchers, of which there are only three other species besides our local Phainopepla , Phainopepl nitens. The Black-and-white Phainoptila , Phainoptila melanoxantha from Costa Rica and Panama. It would appear that this is the only bird with this capability.

We also observed the beautifully patterned Prevost’s Ground-Sparrow , a sparrow very different from the ones that go by the same name in Costa Rica.

Its native range stretches from the southern Pacific coast of Mexico south to northwestern Costa Rica, where it is an inhabitant of arid to semihumid woodland and open areas with scattered trees. The young followed the parents around in small family groups well after they had fledged.
