In the good old tradition of Stresemann and Mayr we were an ornithological nation, gathering systematic data on bird numbers and distribution of our regular breeding and wintering birds. There was no vetting process whatsoever. Regarding the treatment of rare birds or vagrants however, we had barely left the hand axe stage.

I’m not sure what the collective noun for a group of petrels is, but the vets and wildlife carers of New Zealand might be forgiven for thinking that it might be a wreck after this week. It breeds on the Chatham Islands and some of the islands south of New Zealand, as well as Gough and Tristan da Cunha in the Atlantic.

It’s hard to ignore the link to the credit crunch, which has likely affected pet owner’s abilities to meet the food and vet bills needed for their pets. The breed of the animal-with pure bred animals more expensive than mongrels and moggies. This would cover vet bills of up to $6,220 and therefore isn’t to be scoffed at.
