Colorado is unique in many respects, so it comes as no surprise that its residents went in a different direction when selecting their state bird. Instead, they are summer visitors, moving up to Colorado in the warm months to breed before returning to wintering grounds in Texas, Arizona, New Mexico, and Mexico.

These lands support countless birds, either year-round, as migratory stopovers, or as breeding grounds. In fact, the overwhelming majority of federal land is in just 11 western states (Arizona, California, Colorado, Idaho, Montana, Nevada, New Mexico, Oregon, Utah, Washington, and Wyoming). Now, here in Colorado this is the season for the high-country birds. This is my time of year to explore thin air and look for unique Colorado breeders. Brown-capped Rosy-Finch This larger finch can be found in summer feeding on the edge of snow fields usually above 11,400 feet, which is timberline here in Colorado.

The endangered Golden-cheeked Warbler breeds only in Texas Hill Country near Austin and San Antonio, but much of its nesting grounds have cleared in favor of subdivisions. For example, a developer could set aside land for protection within the project (“on-site mitigation”). That would theoretically result in “no net loss” of habitat.

There were birders from a wide cross-section of the United States: Colorado, Ohio, Idaho, Iowa, Wyoming, Washington State, Pennsylvania, New York State, New Jersey, California, Texas, Florida. The leopards place their kill in a tree, protecting it from poaching by other predators. So, the best way to find a leopard is to find the kill.

Living in Colorado, I was practically next door neighbors to a Spix’s Macaw, “Presley,” who was discovered in an Evergreen living room—the only known Spix’s Macaw in the United States—and who was repatriated to Brazil before I even knew he existed. Ellen Kessler, like many birders the world over, would like to see a Spix’s Macaw.
