Egg harvesting to sell as food was intensive then, with thousands taken annually from the breeding colonies in Chile. Egg collection for local consumption still continues at lower scale.

I found some at Target, some in catalogs, some in antique malls, but why wasn’t anyone creating a lifestyle brand for animal lovers? I hope to do a new one each year so they may be collected by our loyal customers. This breed and this mare seemed to be a good match for our family. There are so many of us!

This species might indeed merit a bit more research – the only paper I found on its breeding looked at only 7 nests (of which 3 failed). Or maybe there was just more need to collect food, but I like the first explanation better.

So, the birds start collecting mud and small sticks. There was a breeding pair at Binjiang Forest Park this June. A pair of Grey-capped Greenfinches seemed to be collecting nesting material – I thought it is a bit late but the HBW states that their breeding season is Mar–Aug and that they have two broods.
