I haven’t yet been birding in Europe but whenever I occasionally skim a field guide about the birds on the other side of the Atlantic, I’m always encouraged to find that I’m already familiar with many species found over there, even though most of my birding experience has been limited to eastern North America. It was freedom from studies and classrooms, and the weather also made it possible to play baseball, video games, tag, and (in my case), study bird books and look for birds. It’s also why I could still see a lot more bird species even though I already have a healthy year list at the halfway mark.

Fluttering Shearwater ( Puffinus gavia ) Flesh-footed Shearwater ( Puffinus carneipes ) Buller’s Shearwater ( Puffinus bulleri ) Along with these three were Two further species, also both familiar to North American birders, Sooty Shearwaters and Short-tailed Shearwaters. It is also restricted as a breeder to the north of North Island.

Personally, I love exploring new hotspots and discovering new or unusual species when visiting a country. This phase is to familiarize with the species that can be seen. Search for species (or subspecies) endemic to the area visited. Search for my target species (i.e. This is usually easily found on Google.
