It stops those thousands of migrating birds flying across the Gulf of Mexico and directs them right onto the trees, fields, sanctuaries, beaches along the Bolivar Peninsula, where they hopefully find food and fresh water. 9-mile route that takes you down the prairie uplands and salt marshes that make up much of the Bolivar Sanctuary.

It was thought that later nests with smaller clutches were either replacement clutches from a failed nest or from low-quality breeders. Though it is designated as a National Park, it is more commonly known as Sultanpur Bird Sanctuary. The study also noted a correlation between the monsoon water levels and the number of nests.

This area includes Arcata Marsh and Wildlife Sanctuary, part of Audubon’s Humboldt Bay Important Bird Area (IBA). Heading west on highway 255 around the north end of Arcata Marsh and Wildlife Sanctuary, we drove to the Humboldt Bay jetty in search of the Rock Sandpiper ( Calidris ptilocnemis ).

In Taiwan, two major sanctuaries have been allocated as part of the spoonbill recovery program. Many of these potential breeders though will not nest. Habitat destruction, disease and hunting are still major problems that affect the conservation efforts, but the breeding sites and wintering grounds now have international protection.

He made a whirlwind tour of some of the best birding areas in the country, from the Karajukica Bunari peat bog in the extreme southwest (by the border with Montenegro) all the way to the Slano Kopovo Crane Sanctuary in the northeast. The Great Grey Shrike is another fairly common species seen several times in our trip.
