It is a bit worrying that while the Basel Zoo is listed by Google as having a page on the Red-tailed Laughingthrush , that page itself does not seem to exist anymore, and the species is not listed among the inhabitants of the aviary of the zoo. His obituary was published in Nature. Note to those readers who do not know Wham!:

At least they seem to understand that raising chicks is hard and annoying work and have found at least a partial solution for this problem: “co-operative breeder, up to four individuals attending chicks at one nest, at least three seen to feed chicks” (HBW). There probably is a Billy Bragg song about them.

Previously known as the Whale-headed Stork, its scientific name of Balaeniceps rex translates as “King Whalehead”, in reference to its giant whale or shoe-shaped head and bill. Due to disturbance by fishermen, habitat destruction and nest robbing for zoos and bird collections, the Shoebill is now classified as vulnerable.

The Latin name swinhoii is a reference to Robert Swinhoe, a British naturalist and diplomat with the usual shortish but colorful life of many of the colonial managers. But then, I am not a cooperative breeder either (nor a non-cooperative one, should this term exist). Participated in the opium wars, died of syphilis, etc.
