In the end, I opted for the Tamis River floodplain, north of Belgrade, and its fish farms, some non-operational, some selling daily angling licenses. Driving with open windows (to hear the birds) becomes unbearable and I am heading out of this fish farm. Watching carefully, yes, not one, but two.

As always, the woods around the marsh were busy with breeders setting up shop. In addition to the Veery I saw or heard a pair of Yellow-billed Cuckoos , some cooperative Eastern Kingbirds , Swamp Sparrows , Warbling Vireos , Wood Thrush , Cedar Waxwings , a Worm-eating Warbler , and, well, you get the idea: it was awesome!

When we factor in a precarious trip punctuated with such hazards as stalking, demon-flight Peregrines , trigger happy humans, missing habitats, and other nasty situations, maybe those non-breeders are the smart ones? After starting the morning with an unsuccessful search for Rusty Sparrow in Orotina, we hit three main shorebird sites.

Spring migration flies by – literally – rather quickly in the northeast but the closeness of the Adirondacks means that although all those boreal-breeding warblers, kinglets, thrushes, and sparrows disappear from my local patch by late May, many of them haven’t gone very far. of Birmingham Michigan have released Piping Plover Pilsner.
