One of the two sub-species of Red Knot occurring in North America, the Rufa subspecies breeds in the Canadian Artic Region and migrates along the east or Atlantic coast of the United States. The other sub-species, Calidris canutus roselaari , migrates along the Pacific Coast and breeds in Alaska and the Wrangel Island in Russia.

Either that, or I see them in spring with hordes of other shorebirds feeding on the eggs of Horseshoe Crabs. It has an enormous range, occurring in such far-flung locales as New Zealand, Saudi Arabia, Alaska, Greenland, and Brazil, to name just a few. Ruddy Turnstone is a Species of Least Concern according to BirdLife International.

As a Northeast birder I am familiar with the alarming decrease in the number of Red Knots along Atlantic shores and have signed petitions and written e-mails calling for legislation and rules that will limit the overharvesting of the horseshoe crab, whose eggs Red Knots depend on. million in the late 1990’s. Should the gulls be controlled?

It didn’t occur to me till I started reading The Falcon Thief: A True Tale of Adventure, Treachery, and the Hunt for the Perfect Bird that there was also a possible threat to the eagle herself: poachers, who steal raptor eggs and chicks. We are cautioned to keep the location of the eagle a secret.

She also monitors Pied Oystercatchers breeding along a 23km stretch of beach by bicycle and on foot. Speaking of pregnant snakes, do sea snakes lay their eggs ashore like sea turtles or do they keep them internally until the young are ready to hatch/ be born, like some sharks? It seems like there is great diversity in this continent.

Each year 120,000 birds visit the island to breed from March through August in burrows that riddle the landscape. After mating, a single egg is laid and incubation duties are shared by both parents. Setting out at night to avoid being caught by the large gulls, they can cover the 10,000 km journey in just two weeks.
