The new Lifers are the Rose-breasted Grosbeak, Short-tailed Hawk, Mississippi Kites, Juniper Titmouse and Painted Buntings! There is believed to be a very small breeding population of Mississippi Kites that occupy a small area that borders Pima and Cochise Counties.

Though I have been birding for a few years now, I had only birded west of the Mississippi once before my recent trip to Austin, Texas. Again, they are fairly common in the Southwest and Mexico, but for me they felt brand new! Given how far west I found myself, I was hoping for at least a handful of new birds.

In publishing the most current thinking, eBird have become the month’s biggest contributor to the life list, expanding it by 7 brand new species and pushing it to 3774. Mississippi Kite – Ictinia mississippiensis. I just live for this stuff! Not to be out-done, the beats have been out doing their thing as well. 23 Aug 2019.
