Visiting Guyana brought with it the unavoidable expectation of seeing some mind boggling species – some endangered, some emblematic, others downright bizarre. Before we boarded the flight to Guyana we already knew that probabilities of seeing one of the target species was slashed to near zero. After all, there were already rocks.

The Birds of Washington, DC

Oh sure, you can go to Rock Creek Park or the Tidal Basin to seek out living avian species, or visitors can head to the Smithsonian museums for a dose of past and present bird lore from all over the world. Throngs of people had lined up on the rainy Sunday to see the brand new dinosaur and fossil exhibit, and it did NOT disappoint.

In case you do not know that brimstone is sulfur, the Brimstone Canary brings the point home by having the Latin species name sulphurata. National Audubon Society Birds of North America: A Guide Review

Pough “with illustrations in color of every species” by Don Eckelberry, Doubleday, 1946. The National Audubon Society Birds of North America covers all species seen in mainland United States, Canada and Baja California. The press material says it covers over 800 species, so you know I had to do a count.

Old Crow is a bit harsher than your favorite top-shelf bourbon, but the flaws of this classic brand can be easily hidden in an Old Fashioned or a Manhattan. “I’m fly like an eagle and I drink Old Crow.”
