Or would be, had I encountered more of them – so far, I have seen only a very small share of the approximately 233 woodpecker species, and got decent photos of an even smaller number – not much more than 10% of all of them. T he Grey-capped Pygmy Woodpecker (Tengchong, China) is a tiny bit bigger and looks much soberer.

A mozzie bites me, so I take the “Expedition Plus Insect Repellent” from my rucksack (when I think about it now, any local brand would probably be equally efficient, but they lack the word “expedition” which immediately turns you into a proper explorer) and start spraying my hands and neck. As this African Green Pigeon shows, the color should offer good camouflage for species living on trees. In case you do not know that brimstone is sulfur, the Brimstone Canary brings the point home by having the Latin species name sulphurata. Due to a misunderstanding, this species is currently banned in Russia ( Swift Tern ).

The last time I birded Longcanggou, a national forest park in China’s Sichuan province, was in November 2021. Today, the national forest park is open to tourists – which in China means large groups of people in similarly large buses. Unfortunately, some other species do not seem to listen to the wren much.

Most of such bird tours are branded “Borneo”, without ever mentioning the name of the country in the name of the tour. Malaysia comprises two halves separated by the South China Sea, the Peninsula and East Malaysia (northern Borneo), the latter made up of the states of Sabah and Sarawak.

(Of However, the fact that there are 30 subspecies seems to indicate that the species has a slightly overblown estimation of its own importance. In publishing the most current thinking, eBird have become the month’s biggest contributor to the life list, expanding it by 7 brand new species and pushing it to 3774. 7 species were added to the life list in the time-honoured fashion of actually identifying the birds in the field. I just live for this stuff!
