Interestingly, Chestnut-collared Longspur does appear under its brand-new official name, Thick-billed Longspur, though the description underneath uses the old name. My assumption is that it is meant to be a resource for beginning birders and families who like to spend time outdoors, and it does have potential as a one-stop reference guide.

A Birder Reads a Scientific Paper

Several years ago, I read about the enormous colonies of breeding birds in the Northwestern Hawaiian Islands and I did some research to satisfy my curiosity. ( Google Scholar is an excellent resource and free full-text PDFs can be located for many papers, particularly when research is taxpayer-funded.

National Geographic Field Guide to the Birds of North America, 7th Edition: A Field Guide Review

Looks exactly the same at first until you notice brand-new images of the kite in flight. And, this has nothing to do with this comparison, but I’m hoping that the 8th edition will include a note about the breeding Mississippi Kites in Wareham, N.J., We are living in a wonderfully rich world of birding resources.
