There is believed to be a very small breeding population of Mississippi Kites that occupy a small area that borders Pima and Cochise Counties. I traveled far enough south, with in 10 miles of the Mexico border in order to find Thick-billed Kingbirds! Not great photos but what can you expect for a bird that was 500-600 yards away?

Brown Pelicans , and the northernmost Brown Booby breeding colony on this side of the Pacific. But meanwhile, let’s look at the four avian families that comprise the brand new order Suliformes. Ringer Gannets and Boobies (Sulidae) Black-and-white gannets breed on the cold, rocky coasts of the northern and southern oceans.

The Peterson Field Guide to Birds of North America, Second Edition covers 807 species in the United States and Canada (like most field guides labelled ‘North America, it doesn’t include Mexico and Central America). Adding the 76 new species in the Hawaii section, this makes coverage of approximately 884 species.

The rest of Mexico is not included, nor is Hawaii (which isn’t in North America, after all, but has been accepted as part of the American Birding Association area). Interestingly, Chestnut-collared Longspur does appear under its brand-new official name, Thick-billed Longspur, though the description underneath uses the old name.

In 1987, only 27 were left in the wild and drastic action was taken to save the species: all remaining birds were captured, the California Condor was declared extinct in the wild, and a captive breeding program was begun, initially carried out by the San Diego Wild Animal Park and the Los Angeles Zoo.
