A little bit of research when I got home unraveled the ways of publishers here and in Great Britain. The amount of information varies, with less material on vagrants and rare species, and extended entries on notable species. Even during the breeding season the birds appear to be quite unwary of humans.

Several years ago, I read about the enormous colonies of breeding birds in the Northwestern Hawaiian Islands and I did some research to satisfy my curiosity. ( Google Scholar is an excellent resource and free full-text PDFs can be located for many papers, particularly when research is taxpayer-funded.

There are page references to and from the Species Accounts maps, which makes research transparently easy. Range maps are given for all species except accidental, non-established exotic, extirpated, limited-range introduced, and probably extinct species.
