Birding Hongbenghe, Yunnan (Part 1)

10,000 Birds

The scientific species name of the Rusty-naped Pitta oatesi honors Eugene William Oates (1845-1911), an English civil servant in India and naturalist. He published a number of books on birds of India and Burma, making me wonder how hard all these overseas civil servants really worked in their day jobs.

The North American Model of Wildlife Conservation and Who Pays for It

10,000 Birds

Developed in the post-frontier era, the NAMWC helped put a stop to wanton wildlife destruction in an era where many species were being hunted and trapped ruthlessly to the brink of extinction. The system was intended as a hunter-centric model, both guided by and benefitting consumptive interests.

10,000 Birds

It should cover all of the obvious topics, such as selecting binoculars, how to look at a bird, how to use a field guide, where to go birding, birding ethics, birding terminology, birding books, eBird, etc. Until now, it has only been open for hunters. The target audience should be new birders and the birding curious.

When conservation and animal rights collide

10,000 Birds

One of the first examples I ever encountered was in the books of Gerald Durrell, the famous conservationist who was an early pioneer of the roles of zoos in conservation. He often defended that role in his books from animal rights activists who opposed “imprisoning” animals in zoos even if it saved them from extinction.

Ghana – Rainforest Birding on the Brink by Adam Riley

10,000 Birds

Blue-moustached Bee-eater is rainforest species occurring in just a few scattered sites in Ghana, it was previously considered a subspecies of Blue-headed Bee-eater. Back home I meticulously planned the perfect birding route based on our explorations, made the bookings and confirmed the first commercial birding tour to Ghana.
