The festival is now in its 16 th year in the quaint-yet-vibrant town of Fallon, Nevada (about an hour east of Reno), and it draws on the wide array of birds that flock to the area during spring migration. The town is actually nicknamed “The Oasis of Nevada.”) Yellow-headed Blackbird was another lifer for me, and omnipresent.

All of these things can be found in Las Vegas, Nevada. He steered me right and there it was, my first life bird in Nevada! Trips Henderson Bird Viewing Preserve Las Vegas Nevada' That is, all of them can be found in Las Vegas except the last one on the list. It looked pretty darn nice through the scope though!

There are whole regions of the country from the Great Lakes west to Nevada where official hawkwatching is essentially non-existent, due to lack of migration density, so If you live in one of the places it is possible to see this magical migration you need to grab that opportunity. Closely linked to the spectacle is the ‘quality’ of the birds.

Hornbills are spectacular under any circumstances, but when a pair lands in a bush beside you at eye-level and begin mutual preening , it makes for a spectacular experience. It was easily one of the best birding experiences I’ve ever had, even impressing my nonbirder fiance. You can read more about his experience here.
