And, if you don’t get Eastern Phoebe or if they winter, what species do you use as your sure sign that spring has arrived? I think that both are correct, but the eastern phoebe usually only passes through the NYC area during spring, while tree sparrows nest here and stay over summer. I chanced to glance at a bird perched atop the Oak tree in my back yard, figuring it was one of the Blackbirds or Grackles that had recently returned to my neighborhood. A trip to the coastal plain may net you up to seven species of warblers, from the omnipresent Yellow-rumps to Chats and Cape Mays. Instead I saw a flash of orange.

“Blackbirds&# do not have the same ability. This will be the feeder that the blackbirds will avoid and the other birds can eat in peace. Safflower is not the favorite food of house sparrows, red-winged blackbirds and squirrels. They might eat it if they have to but it can sometimes keep those species away too.
