We here at 10,000 Birds have long been enamored with what could conceivably be the cutest pair of birds in all of North America – the kinglets. Few birds are as likely to bring a smile to an observer than a kinglet and their abundance means that the sheer number of smiles that they have caused must be enormous.

There’s something very matter-of-fact about seeking out non-native target species. And when the bird is finally spotted and added to whatever list you care about at that time, it’s almost as if you feel resigned to this milestone. Get your bird. And truth told, it’s far from an unattractive bird.

During our three week visit to Singapore in March we spent a good part of each day walking and birding. By 17th March we were not expecting to find too many more new birds to add to our list. The previous day in the Southern Ridges we had an odd encounter with what initially appeared to be a small bird flying through the trees.

However, no problem there because any pangs of loss or longing to lay eyes on a MEGA bird is quickly assuaged by glassing good birds, and that’s pretty easy to accomplish in Costa Rica, especially at El Tapir. Although I wish I could say that I have seen a DGB lately, I must admit that has not been the case.

For the many birds that depend on the saltings for their food, high tide is a time for roosting and waiting. If you are a birdwatcher or bird photographer, there’s no finer place to be than an estuary when the tide is falling. These were dark-bellied birds from Russia. Both species of geese have increased hugely in recent years.
