Birding Wolongshan, Sichuan, China

10,000 Birds

With travel restrictions still in place, going on a birding trip outside of China is still not a practical option. Fortunately, China itself has a large number of bird species and habitats. The first stop was Wolongshan, a place known more for its giant pandas than its birds. Well, yes.

Birding Longcanggou, Sichuan

10,000 Birds

It is a well-known birding hotspot, though access to some of its parts may be tricky without a local guide. There is quite a bit of construction going on, so in the future, the park may become much more accessible to tourists, and at the same time much less attractive for shy birds (and their birder followers).

Does it Count? or Is This a List I See Before Me?

10,000 Birds

I suppose there a hypothetical life list of all the birds I have seen, but I have no idea how long that list is. But to review a list of a day, a site, a trip, a year, a county, a country, a life even, is in essence the story of the birds you saw and the birding you did. I honestly have no particular memory of these birds.

Birding Wawushan, Sichuan

10,000 Birds

In many ways, birding Wawushan is a nightmare for a solitary and crowd-hating birder like me. An unnamed bird guide called them “avoidless tourists”, which sums it up rather nicely. So, all this makes birding this place an occasionally less than pleasant experience. Never fails to startle them.

Birding the Wolongshan area in June 2023

10,000 Birds

For birders, the Wolongshan area is like a poorer cousin of Balangshan – due to the lower elevation, the bird species here are more common and thus less interesting. And of course, birders (at least me) do not care too much for Giant Pandas, which are the main attraction of this area, despite their pathetic habits.
